San Antonio Residents to Large Commercial Property Owners: “We’re No Fools!”
Approximately 40 people rallied and marched outside the Homewood Suites hotel on the Riverwalk to highlight big commercial property owners that exploit property tax law.
If you weren’t able to make the action you can do your part by signing the petition to support a fair property tax system in Texas: http://bit.ly/RVTpetition
The following organizations participated in the April 1st action: SEIU Texas, Texas Organizing Project, Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, Fuerza Unida, Southwest Workers Union, Domesticas Unidas, Martinez Street Women’s Center, and the Texas Workers Alliance, Mission Trails MHC Neighborhood, and the PEACE Initiative.
When large property owners manipulate a flawed property tax system, they do more than just get a big discount – they also shift the burden to homeowners and regular taxpayers.
According to the Houston Chronicle last year,
In Bexar County, the clause allowed a new $600 million J.W. Marriott resort, in 2010 the largest Marriott in the world, to reduce its taxable value by more than half.
To Michael Amezquita, Bexar County’s chief appraiser, “It’s the equivalent of backing up the Brink’s truck to the public trough and driving away.” In his opinion, “It’s a legal way to steal dollars.”
Most homeowners pay property taxes on the real values of their properties and do their part to support kids and schools.
Its time for big commercial property owners to do the same.
